Ripple Clears First MiCA Hurdle In Luxembourg As July 1st Deadline Looms For Crypto Firms

Crypto giant Ripple has taken a major step toward expanding its footprint in Europe’s payments market after receiving preliminary approval for a Crypto Asset Service Provider license from Luxembourg’s Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF).Β

The company disclosed the conditional approval on Tuesday, noting it falls under the European Union’s (EU) Markets in Crypto Assets framework (MiCA) and remains subject to final conditions before any new European services can launch.

Ripple Eyes Full EU Payments Play

In its official announcement, Ripple said the CASP license β€” paired with its existing EU Electronic Money Institution license β€” would allow European banks and corporates to connect to its full payments infrastructure through a single integration. Once fully authorized, the combination of both licenses would make the crypto firm MiCA-compliant across the bloc.

The timing matters. MiCA’s transitional period officially expires on July 1, 2026 β€” eight days from now. From that date, any business offering crypto-asset services to EU clients without a MiCA license will be in breach of EU law and must immediately cease operations.Β

Ripple already operates in Europe under existing licenses, so it won’t be forced to shut down. But without full MiCA authorization, it cannot expand or launch new services in the region after the deadline passes.

Cassie Craddock, Managing Director for UK and Europe at Ripple, said MiCA “has helped to unlock a new wave of institutional digital assets adoption” and that Ripple is seeing “demand accelerate across the region.”Β

The executive added in her statement that with Ripple’s growing European presence and institutional-grade infrastructure, the company is “ready to meet the moment.”

The Clock Is Ticking For The Rest Of The Industry

Ripple’s move comes as the broader crypto industry faces a hard deadline. Of more than 1,200 firms that previously held national Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) registrations across the EU, only around 210 have converted to full CASP authorization β€” a conversion rate of just 17%.Β

Among the firms that made it through, Kraken, Coinbase, Bitstamp, Bitpanda, OKX, and Crypto.com have all secured full MiCA licenses. On the stablecoin side, Circle’s USDC and EURC are the only top-ten stablecoins fully compliant with the framework.Β

That context makes Ripple’s Luxembourg approval significant β€” even in preliminary form. Full authorization still has to come through formally, but getting a green light from the CSSF puts the company well ahead of the pack.Β
