Coinbase And Grayscale Are Both Replacing Senior Leaders β€” Here Is What Happened

Two of the crypto industry’s largest companies disclosed leadership changes on Thursday. Coinbase’s chief legal officer, Paul Grewal, announced he is leaving after six years at the exchange, and Grayscale confirmed that its chief financial officer, Edward McGee, has resigned, naming two interim replacements to fill the role.

The Transition Plan At CoinbaseΒ

Grewal notified Coinbase (COIN) that he will officially step down on July 31. But to ensure a β€œsmooth transition,” he will remain available under a three-month advisory agreement through October, while also keeping his seat on the board of Coinbase National Trust Company.Β

Two internal executives will divide his responsibilities β€” Molly Abraham, currently vice president of legal, moves into the General Counsel role. Ryan VanGrack takes on a newly created position as Vice Chairman and head of corporate affairs.

VanGrack will reportedly serve as the second-in-command to Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, focusing on global strategy and representing the company to policymakers and stakeholders.Β

In his message on X (formerly Twitter), Grewal cited taking Coinbase public, winning its legal battle with the SEC, relocating the company from Delaware to Texas, and helping pass the GENIUS and CLARITY Act as the defining moments of his tenure. “Now is my time for new adventures,” he wrote.

Grayscale’s Leadership Keeps ChangingΒ

McGee’s exit from Grayscale was confirmed in a Thursday filing with the SEC, which stated that the departure was for personal reasons and not connected to any disagreement with the company, its operations, or its management.Β

The exchange-traded fund (ETF) issuer appointed Kathryn Masci and Daniel Plourde as co-chief financial officers. Masci will also take on the role of principal financial and accounting officer and join the company’s board of managers.

McGee’s exit is the second significant senior departure at Grayscale over the last month. John Hoffman, the company’s managing director and head of distribution and partnerships, left the firm to join Ondo Finance (ONDO).

The back-to-back exits come as Grayscale has also paused its plans to go public, having confidentially filed for a US IPO in November 2025 before putting the process on hold due to market conditions. Sources familiar with the matter have disclosed that the company is unlikely to restart preparations before the fourth quarter of this year.
