Trump Set To Sign Housing Bill That Would Ban CBDCs Through 2030
On Tuesday, the US House of Representatives passed the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, a housing package that pairs affordability measures with a significant restriction on digital assets β a ban on Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) through 2030 β sending the legislation to President Donald Trump’s desk for his signature.
At its core, a Central Bank Digital Currency, or CBDC, is a digital version of a country’s official currency issued and managed directly by its central bank, or Federal Reserve (Fed).Β In the case of the US, it would essentially be a government-issued digital dollar recorded on a centralized ledger, where every transaction would be visible to the issuing authority.Β
Unlike decentralized cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC) or Ethereum (ETH), it could hand federal authorities the power to monitor or restrict how and where money is spent, which sits at the heart of the push to ban CBDCs.
The Push To Block CBDCs
Opposition to a digital dollar has been growing in Washington. Previously, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer described CBDCs as a ‘weaponized surveillance tool’, arguing that the concept runs counter to the values of ‘privacy, freedom, and free market competition’.Β
Trump aligned himself with that position early in his second term, signing an executive order in January 2025 that prohibited his administration from taking any steps toward developing a CBDC, stating at the time that such a currency would “threaten the stability of the financial system, individual privacy, and the sovereignty of the United States.”
That executive order has now been followed by congressional action. The housing bill passed Tuesday enshrines that opposition into statute, barring the Federal Reserve from issuing or creating CBDCsβ or any digital asset substantially similar to one β through the end of 2030.Β

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Scott, whose committee played a key role in advancing the legislation, stated in a press release:Β

The legislation now awaits President Donald Trump’s signature, which would make the CBDC ban the first of its kind to be written into US law.
