A $15 Million Bitcoin Security Consortium Just Launched β€” BlackRock, Strategy and Coinbase Are Behind It

BlackRock, Strategy, and Coinbase joined six other major crypto industry firms Thursday to announce the Bitcoin Security Consortium β€” a new organization backed by $15 million in member pledges over three years, focused on funding the long-term security of the Bitcoin (BTC) network, including preparation for the eventual threat posed by quantum computing.

The full list of founding members includes Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, BlackRock, Block, Blockstream, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets, Galaxy, and Strategy.Β

Each member will direct its own portion of the funding independently to the developers, researchers, and organizations it chooses to support, with no central allocation mechanism.

Bitcoin Security Gets Institutional BackingΒ

The consortium’s stated purpose is to support and fund the developers and researchers already working on Bitcoin’s security β€” not to control or direct Bitcoin’s protocol development.Β

The consortium describes its model as similar to how industry groups have historically supported open-source software they depend on β€” contributing resources and visibility without influencing the underlying work.

Strategy CEO Phong Le said that as long-term BTC holders, the founding members have a direct financial interest in the network remaining secure for decades. Funding the people doing that security work and helping communicate what that work involves is a practical way to contribute, he said.

Robert Mitchnick, Global Head of Digital Assets at BlackRock, pointed specifically to Bitcoin core developers β€” the engineers who maintain and improve the Bitcoin software at the protocol level β€” describing their work as critically important and the consortium’s funding as meaningful additional support for their long-term security efforts.

The quantum computing dimension is the most forward-looking part of the consortium’s mandate. Quantum computers powerful enough to break Bitcoin’s cryptographic foundations do not exist today, and credible technical estimates place that capability years away.Β

The Quantum Clock Is Already Ticking

Bitcoin’s security currently relies on elliptic curve cryptography, a mathematical system that classical computers cannot crack but that sufficiently powerful quantum machines could theoretically defeat.Β

The Bitcoin technical community is already actively working on post-quantum protections, and the consortium intends to support that research and serve as a reliable information source for investors and the public as the field develops.

In the coming months, the consortium plans to publish and maintain materials on BTC’s security that will be updated as developments warrant. The organization will also support the developer community through the member pledges over the three-year commitment period.

The formation arrives at a moment when institutional Bitcoin ownership has reached levels that make long-term network security a direct financial concern for some of the world’s largest asset managers.

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust holds well over $60 billion in Bitcoin. Strategy holds 843,775 BTC valued at approximately $54.5 billion. Fidelity Digital Assets also manages billions in crypto through exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on behalf of institutional clients.Β

For these organizations, BTC’s security is not just a technical question β€” it is a material risk factor for assets on their balance sheets and in their products.
