Bitcoin Is Frozen in Time β Cardano’s Hoskinson Says That Is the Real Quantum Threat
Cardano (ADA) co-founder Charles Hoskinson issued a direct warning about Bitcoin’s (BTC) long-term dominance in an interview with The Starting Block on Friday, arguing that quantum computing could expose a fundamental weakness in how the world’s largest cryptocurrency handles change β and that failure to adapt could cost it the top position.
The Governance Problem Bitcoin Has Never Had to FaceΒ
Hoskinson’s argument is not primarily about quantum computing itself. It is about governance. Bitcoin has survived extraordinary external pressure over its history β regulatory attacks, exchange collapses, the disappearance of its founder β and emerged stronger each time.Β
But quantum computing presents a different kind of test, one that requires the network to coordinate and implement meaningful technical changes rather than endure. That, Hoskinson argued, is where Bitcoin’s rigidity becomes a liability.
“The issue with Bitcoin is it’s frozen in time. It’s very difficult to change anything,” he said. That inflexibility, he added, was part of what motivated the creation of Ethereum (ETH) in the first place β Hoskinson was among Ethereum’s original co-founders alongside Vitalik Buterin before departing to build Cardano.Β
The pattern of frustration with BTC’s resistance to change has driven multiple major projects in crypto’s history, and Hoskinson sees quantum computing as the issue that will put that resistance to its most serious test yet.
“Quantum computers are yet another threat,” he said. “If Bitcoin’s governance is such that it’s impossible to actually make meaningful progress, or they compromise the core reason to use Bitcoin, I don’t think Bitcoin’s going to stay the number one cryptocurrency.”
Cardano Is Preparing Its Biggest Upgrade YetΒ
The quantum threat to BTC is not immediate. Large-scale quantum computers capable of breaking the elliptic curve cryptography that secures Bitcoin wallets do not exist today, and credible technical estimates place that capability years away.Β
But preparing post-quantum cryptographic protections requires the kind of coordinated protocol upgrade that Bitcoin’s decentralized governance structure makes notoriously difficult.Β
That is the core of Hoskinson’s concern β not that quantum computers exist now, but that by the time they do, BTC may not have the governance infrastructure to respond effectively.
Hoskinson positioned Cardano as the answer to that structural problem. Cardano can hold an on-chain vote and execute a migration if quantum-vulnerable infrastructure needs to be replaced, he said β a process that would be far more difficult to coordinate on Bitcoin.Β
He framed Cardano as a βspiritual successorβ to Bitcoin that preserves its founding principles while correcting limitations that Satoshi Nakamoto never had the time or expertise to resolve.Β
“Cardano is, in many ways, a spiritual successor. It reflects correcting a lot of things that I think that Satoshi couldn’t get around to because of expertise or time but was directionally moving there,” he said.
Hoskinson also disclosed that Cardano is preparing what he described as its biggest upgrade to date β one that will make the network approximately 60 times faster. He said the scale of the upgrade requires the team to remain fully focused. “We can’t just be asleep at the wheel for that.”Β
The interview landed the same week that BlackRock, Strategy, and Coinbase announced the formation of the Bitcoin Security Consortium β a $15 million initiative backed by nine major institutional players specifically aimed at funding research into Bitcoin’s long-term security, including post-quantum cryptography.Β
