TRUMP Memecoin Left Nearly A Million Investors With $3.8 Billion In Losses
Nearly a million investors have reportedly lost money on the TRUMP memecoin, which is directly associated with President Donald J. Trump. According to a Nansen report cited by The New York Times, 988,905 investors who bought the token recorded losses by the end of June 2026, with combined losses reaching $3.81 billion.Β
That figure represents two out of every three investors who purchased the coin β and it comes the same week that President Trump’s own financial disclosure revealed he personally walked away with $636 million from the same bet.
The coin launched at under $1 and surged past $70, briefly reaching an all-time high of $75.35. It now trades at $1.67 β down 80% year to date and nearly 98% below that peak, according to CoinGecko.Β
TRUMP Memecoin’s Winners and LosersΒ
The window between the launch price and the top created an opportunity that a relatively small number of sophisticated traders exploited. Nansen found that just under 500,000 wallets recorded profits from TRUMP, totaling $4 billion.Β
But as the analytics firm put it, that figure “reflects a small number of early buyers capturing enormous gains while the broad retail majority absorbed the losses.”
Nicholas Pinto is one of those retail investors. Pinto told the Times he put roughly $500,000 into the TRUMP coin and has since lost about half of that. “He is leveraging the power of being president to launch currencies, when he seems trustworthy in the public’s eye,” Pinto said. “It is kind of incredible. It is almost a legal scam.”
The losses sit in stark contrast to Trump’s own position. His annual financial disclosure, signed this week, showed the $636 million payout from the TRUMP memecoin was part of a broader crypto haul that, combined with his other business ventures, totaled at least $2.2 billion in 2025.Β
The White House ResponseΒ
The White House pushed back on the criticism that emerged following the financial disclosure. White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said in a statement to the Times:Β
President Trump proudly made the United States the crypto capital of the world. All actions by President Trump and his administration are taken in the best interest of the American people.
David Wachsman, a spokesman for World Liberty (WLFI)β the crypto venture associated with the Trump family β attributed the decline in the WLFI governance token to forces outside anyone’s control.Β
“No one can control the markets,” he said. “World Liberty stands behind the governance token WLFI, which has had increasing utility in a growing ecosystem since day one.”
