Coinbase (COIN) Missed Again β€” a $359 Million Loss and Three Straight Quarters Below Expectations

Coinbase (COIN) posted a net loss of $359.5 million for the second quarter of 2026 on Thursday, missing Wall Street expectations for both earnings and revenue for the third consecutive quarter. As a result, the exchange’s shares fell more than 7% after the bell.

Bad Quarter, Record Market ShareΒ

The numbers were significantly worse than analysts had forecast. Coinbase recorded a loss of $1.36 per share against a consensus expectation of a 17-cent loss. Revenue came in at $1.2 billion, below the $1.3 billion Wall Street had projected.Β

Both figures represent a sharp reversal from a year earlier, when the company reported a profit of $1.43 billion, or $5.14 per share, on revenue of $1.5 billion.

Transaction revenue came in at $599 million and subscription revenue at $555 million β€” both below Wall Street estimates and both lower than the year-earlier period.Β However, there were specific areas of strength buried inside the report.

Coinbase’s crypto trading volume market share reached 10.3% in the second quarter β€” a new all-time high, up from 9.1% in the prior quarter and the third consecutive quarter of market share gains.Β

Crypto derivatives trading volume remained close to its first-quarter all-time high despite the overall crypto derivatives market declining by double digits quarter over quarter, and Coinbase hit an all-time high in derivatives market share for the third straight quarter as well.Β

Prediction markets also stood out β€” contract volumes and revenue more than doubled quarter over quarter, growing 106% and crossing $100 million in annualized revenue.Β

Coinbase Says the Strategy Is WorkingΒ

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong framed the quarter around the market share gains rather than the headline loss. He said hitting a third consecutive all-time high in crypto trading volume market share demonstrated that the exchange can deliver across different market conditions, and argued that Coinbase is no longer primarily a bet on Bitcoin’s price but a platform for the broader transformation of financial services through crypto.

CFO Alesia Haas pointed to expense discipline as another positive, noting that major expense lines came in below the midpoint of guidance. She described the company’s fundamentals as strong despite the market environment and said the diversification strategy is producing real revenue rather than early-stage indicators.

The context matters for reading the results fairly. Coinbase has grown its derivatives and prediction markets businesses meaningfully during a period when spot crypto markets were under pressure β€” a form of cycle management that the market share data supports.Β

But three straight quarters below Wall Street forecasts on both the top and bottom lines means the stock has had little room for investor patience, and Thursday’s after-hours drop reflected that.
